Default rocket network redux

Looks like the Rocket Network from back around 1999-2002 (I think it may have finally died at DigiDesign). All the major players built it into their software but as far as I know nobody really used it. You had to have a hosted studio, which required a subscription fee typically (also your music was on somebody else's server). It's too tempting for companies to try to extract a subscription fee from you.

Rocket was the kind of thing that was cool in principle (like at a professional demonstration) but I think it didn't really work under actual circumstances. But the basic idea was sound, as I understood it - do live sync recording over broadband lines using compressed audio, then once you are finalized your recording or mix you could move just the final takes of full-quality audio over the line.

This new approach makes more sense - plugins (rather than requiring companies to modify their software). I can't tell whether they are trying to get you to buy a subscription or not - it doesn't look like it. Somebody is going to make this work and there is a real need for it imho. Isn't there another company doing this?

Here's at least a couple...

This kind of thing has gone on for a while; the medium of transport is different. Tomahawk (Duane Dennison from The Jesus Lizard and Mike Patton from Mr. Bungle/Faith No More) traded tapes back and forth for song ideas by mail; as did Ben Gibbard and Jimmy Tamborello of The Postal Service (that's how they got the name). It's pretty cool, and like GearJunkie pointed out, makes long-distance bands a possibility.
