Has anyone had a mic re-ribboned? If so where? I have a broken M500.

IIRC, Wes Dooley will re-ribbon. Maybe Royer as well?

Steve Sank does Beyer ribbon replacements that are supposed to sound more like RCAs (probably a good thing, but then you wouldn't have your M500's sound). I remember folks on the TapeOp board having good experiences with him.

I tried to do the re-ribboning by myself once to no avail. My methods were pretty shoddy. I figured it was worth messing around with before I pay the $$$ to get it done professionally.
My buddy tried three or four times. They just kept breaking. He made a jig to do the corrugating and everything. I guess our humble (but noble) attempts should kinda be seen as futile since the factory has all sorts of precision tools to align them within nano inches. But, he was able to get it to pass audio. It is just real low output. I'm gonna put it right up on a drum and see what it sounds like. |
