This is a popular one in other forums but it usually is about which verb is the best sounding. I would like to know which is the one you turn to the most based how much you use it. Reasons for using it so much may include:
a) what reverbs you've got b) overall sound quality c) ease of use d) how well it works on your system The one I turn to the most is the TC Classic Verb plug that came with my powercore DSP card. It doesn't use much CPU because it runs off the card, it sounds great, and it is mind-blowingly simple. Anybody else? |

i like the verb vst in cubase, it is very basic, but it adjusts well, and in addition to the knobs it allows you to adjust visually ala a 2 dimensional graph, that's helpful for us right brained folks who think along more visual lines as opposed to # crunching... minutely adjustable too!

I try to ambient mic whenever possible, I usually hate using digital reverbs. But, you can't always do that. When i need to use reverb I use the Altiverb or the Waves Convolution reverb plugins. the Alitverb sounds the best, the waves sounds decent. I prefer the sampling based reverbs over the algorythmic style. The problem is that processor load with these plugins is excessive. I have to bounce to disk once I have decided on something. I have found that with general digital reverbs that plate settings usually sounds better than a room emulation, so I'll use a plate if processor is an issue. I wish I had that UAD-card with the plate reverb plugin, those are supposed to sound great.

In my opinon its hard to find a good plugin to use, that sounds decent without it being used 100% wet. Lexicon is hardly transparent, dverb is just barely useable, probably the best I found and the least audible ( meaning to me that you can hear the individual processing of the reverb) is TC which Dan mentioned. kind of a lose lose so far in my opinion in regards to plugin verbs.

convo reverbs definately can be taxing on your CPU. That's why I end up using them less and algo's more. Here is a really cool free reverb if anyone is interested in convolution reverb:

I like to use the bathtub in my house. High ceilings and very reflective. It sounds great for guitar, vocals, and overdubs of percussion. If I have to use some fake 'verb, I have made some custom patches in a VS2400 that do the trick.

I think the fake verbs are incredibly useful especially if you are mixing somebody elses tracks. The trick is to use them sparingly unless you are trying to get that "effected" sound.

Convolution.
I've used Waves IR1 and it was freaking awesome. Just recently got Tascam Gigapulse. Not as dope but dope. The included mic modeling feature is pretty cool too. Yes, very CPU heavy but very nice too. I ususally have to bounce the band tracks to 2 track just so I can use the Gigapulse on the vox. |

I had a tuck and roll Kustom PA that i'd reamp stuff into, with the reverb turned up all the way it was all wet.
I also have my Dad's Silvertone 6x10 that does the same thing, and it runs the reverb though the tremolo too. Nothing beats sitting in a room listening to reamped reverb record. |
