Default low level impulses / portable digital recorders w/ built in mics

hello all,
so, my drummers has a Nagra Ares-IIp (actually, his is a frankenstein of a couple of their models) that he got an awesome deal on. anyway, we use it for recording our performances and sampling sounds, etc. so, the problem is that when we record soft things it you can hear this low level, steady clicking. this is buried when recording loud things, but it makes soft recordings unusable. it doesn't have a hard drive in it, so it can't be some sort of internal noise from that... it uses a CF card. the mic we use with it is the one that came with it, which is a removable stereo condenser mic. anyway, i don't think it always made this sound, and nagra is usually infallible, ... any ideas what it could be?

on similar note, i have been thinking about picking up a small portable recorder for myself, but have yet to dish out the dough for one. i have been using a minidisc for years to sample sounds, but i'm sick of the flatness of the recordings. i want something small with a built-in mic that i can just take out of my pocket and record what i hear. i want it to be very small...but with good sound. the marantz pmd660 is too big and sounds like shit i hear. nagra supposedly came out with a smaller recording recently, but i have yet to find any significant reviews of it (the ares-m). maudio has that new little device, but it doesn't have a built in mic. sony just came out with one called the PCM-D1 i think, but it's way too expensive. i came across this company the other day that has some options: http://www.aeq.es/eng/index.htm but i don't know anything about them. anyway, does any one have other suggestions or have tried any of these devices?

You might double-check on that. It might come with a little stereo condenser that plugs right into the imput. Or at least that's definitely an option.

wow, you're right. did they always include that?? strange, i don't remember that being there when they first released it. anyway, i'd prefer not to plug anything in... besides the sound quality, that's my second biggest complaint with my minidisc.

a friend of mine just got the little maudio. he noted that the key is in the card you get for it. he had a problem with data corruption on his first recording so he was very unhappy about that, but he was quite pleased with the speed of data transfer to his PC. with its size it makes a great super-secret spy device.

Turns out that data corruption was just a one off glitch and it hasn't happened since.
