I like the Fostex cassette 4 tracks. I think the eq is horrible, but the tape speed control is choice. The pre's are not horrible, and the fact that it has no XLR inputs is my favorite. A real looker as well....

kinda sounds like a poop sandwich!

poop sandwich indeed! the outs sound crappy, the hosing is plastic, the tracks drop significantly in volume once recorded......uh, it's pretty worthless. but what do you expect for 99 bucks? oh, and you can only record 1 lousy-sounding track at a time.

This happens all the time, as the jack for the power cord is pretty squirrelly. And the "play" button broke so I had to glue it back with epoxy. And the solder for one of the track-playback wires is loose, so I can rarely play all four tracks. Ah, the romanticism of the cassette four-track!

I only keep mine around in hopes of figuring out how to do that routing trick. Someday . . .

It may be the best Portastudio created but I seriously doubt it is the best analog four track. Ampex anyone?

Yeah, I have a feeling there might also be a studer out there that may surpass the awesomeness of the tascam 644.

I just got a 424 MKII and LOVE it. It has a hi-z input for guitar (which sounds fine for demos), 2 XLR inputs (but no phantom power, oh well), and the ability to stripe Midi time code for syncing. I hope they don't phase out cassettes any time soon, because I hate waiting for computers and all of their issues.
