Does anyone have one of the new battery powered recorders that would be fairly affordable for sampling random noises while walking around outdoors? I used to do a lot of found sound stuff with a handheld cassette recorder but the quality was always iffy. What is best for the $?

I use a mini disc player/recorder to do similar functions. However, I need a good little mic to put in that unit to really make it work well. As of now I use a regular mic with an 1/8" adaptor on it. I sure could use a better solution than that.

Have you seen that new Sony PCM D-1? It looks so rediculous.

Oh man, may not be the most professional sound, but take your headphones and plug them into the mic jack. Its a transducer just the same, give it try, I do all rehearsal and live recordings on my MD with headphones. Super easy with a decent result.

MD may not be the best option for you Bellringer, but it sure is the easiest.

i own the zoom ps04 handheld 4 track recorder. it runs on 4 AAs, and saves on a SmartMedia card. it works really well outdoors and in public, has a powerful built in condenser mic, plus 1/4 and 1/8 inch inputs. and it also has a built in drum machine, so you can make your own beats

I've been using a Sony MZR minidisc for YEARS, and it just died, so i may pick up one of those little harddrive recorders for field sampling and such.

It seems things are finally moving on this front. Depending on your budget, either of these looks cool, and way more convenient than the MD:
