I actually ran into this situationon the set of a movie that I was boom op'ing. The director kept on telling me to get closer to pick up the gun. I kept on telling him that we would be sans a working mic if I did this. He almost threw a fit but I stuck to my guns and kept it at a distance. A few days later the one of the producers (the one who was lending us the mic and also was head engineer at CBS radio in LA) thanked me for not listening after I related the story.
