Default mix tips

what are your secrets for making a good mix? any tips that you've learned that never occoured to you till recently? any good gear that made a huge difference?

Use your ears. If you break some rules getting a particualr sound that you want then go for it. Even if in school they taught you never to use the EQ if you like the sound of it twist the EQ knob right off.

Listen to different kinds of music, not just your favorite stuff all the time. Learn how to mix a reggae band as well as a metal band. Learn how to mix country music.

Make the band feel comfortable, happy and relaxed... but not as relaxed as in I just ate a whole stuffed pizza and now I can't sing. Yeah, getting good sounds down to tape will make for better mixes.
