last week my digi 002 rack did the power harness failure thing. i've found stuff about cleaning it... any good experiences with this or should i register and wait for digi to walk me through it/mail a new one?

Digi's support blew me away-- about a year ago, my 002 rack's power supply blew, and I kept getting the intermittent FireWire light and the repeated clicking...
I called digi, shipped my unit off to them, two days later I had a new one. that kind of service is RARE, and gave me steadfast confident in Digi as a recording partner. |

Happened to me too about a month ago. I called at 6pm on a monday and the replacement parts we delivered by 8am the next morn. no charge at all, you might as well call them. but you need to be registered! easy to change cables, no need to send out for repair.

the power harness is the little brick of electronics and some cables to connect that to the unit. I just needed to change the cables and my 002 was revived.(i still have the extra harness, expecting my original to die eventually) If you can run protools you'll have no prob fixing it.

i heard it fails due to oxidation and that it can be revived by cleaning. i've had it for over a year, should i try it?

cant hurt i suppose. if you open it open it should be faiirly obvious which is the power harness cable. The power harness sits on the side wall next to the headphone jack. The cable connects to it right there in the corner and splits to the digital side, and analog side.
again you might as well register, unless you cant for some odd reason. |

i don't see the point if they are just going to send me a clean one.

It worked!!!!!!!!!!! Good as new!
I disconnected the cable and sprayed electronics cleaner on the contacts. I attribute the oxidation to a leak that happened a couple weeks back when it rained all night. The water sat on the ground and evaporated over the course of a couple days. I guess people with digis in rainforests probably have to clean their power harnesses all the time. |

i'm glad to hear that digi has such good service; despite the horrendous waiting time for their phone line......but i can't blame them for that realy. makes my apprehensions about future dealings seem less daunting.
