Default Convolution impulses

Has anyone made their own impulses for convolution reverbs? For the one I use, Perfect Space, you just need a 50ms busrt of white noise recorded wet in wav format. A lot of peope use a starter pistol for this. It is super easy and you can end up with sounds nobody else has.

If I were to make my own impulse of say my living room, is there an advantage over simply reamping my tracks through the living room?

I bought Sound Forge 5 through a special deal of some sort quite a while ago, and it included Acoustic Mirror, which is basically the same thing as Convolution. I didn't use it much, but it sounded good and it was fun to play with, plus I thought the concept was cool.

Recently, I was reinstalling it on my PC, and I found that my authorization code didn't work anymore. I called Sony to find out what was up, and the guy said that they didn't support Sound Forge 5 anymore. He gave me a free upgrade to Sound Forge 7, and I thought "sweet". However, I found out a little later that Acoustic Mirror doesn't work in SF7--they want you to pay more for it. Kind of a bitch that I paid for the right to use it and I used to have it, but not anymore. Oh well.

You won't have to set up speakers and a mic in your living room. You could also give the impulse to somebody else.

Just out of curiousity, what spaces have you sampled? I'd like to get the tracking room at Gravity. There are lots of studios I'd like to get in and sample. The echo chamber that Columbia College has would be great. It used to be a bank vault.

That sucks. If you have VST suport you could use this free one.

Of course it doesn't have any presets but you can find free ones online. I think Noisevault has some good ones.

I did my friends old bedroom. At the time I had to make the sound with my mouth so it didn't turn out great. I've sampled a lot of hardware though. T-Rex Replica, Holy Grail, other convo reverbs, Yamaha MU100, an old PA that was left at my house.

Wait a second. A starter pistol is loud. I'd imagine exciting the room that much is a good idea for sampling the impulse but how did you do that with your mouth?

I did like a beatboxxed kick and snare hit at the same time. It worked okay, was my first attempt. I'm gonna try popping a balloon soon.
