I've had this mic sitting around for a while now to have used it on a bunch of stuff. Overall I'd say I like having it a lot. Since I don't have any gold bars lying around this is about the extent of what I can afford ribbon-wise.
A lot of people warn that many modern cheap preamps will not suffice with this mic. The pres in my old Soundcraft work great with it. I don't have to boost them so much. I recently plugged it directly into the digi 002 pre to test it. On female vocals I had to turn the pre all the way up. Not gonna cut it for many quiet applications if thats all ya got. Overall I like the way this mic sounds a lot and I'm planning to buy another for the Blumlein stereo technique. Yes, it is a bit muffled but from what I hear I could remove the heavy screening that has been factory installed around the ribbon. Plus... I dunno I kinda like the darker sound of it. |

I just watched this video I had downloaded a really long time ago of Zappa doing a show in Barcelona in 1988, and all the horns were miked with ribbons. I love the sound of the recordings from the '88 tour--they have to be some of the best-sounding digital recordings to come out of the '80s, and they're all live to boot. Would horns come to mind to you as a good instrument for a ribbon mic?

Just some further obesvations from on down the road:
I used this on a session for the rack tom. It was the best mic i had around which rejected the sides the most (which is a ton, there were hardly and cymbals in the rack tom track). So of course, then I watched the drummer smack it. And he hit it again, and again. So after the session my mic had three huge dents in the grill, which is gold (see- tacky enough already). I took it apart, which wasn't the easiest and voided the warranty. Anyway the - grill was easy to bend back into shape and the mic still works great. built ford tough. |

Agreed, a friend was using a 421 on a trumpet a while back; never got the sound that he was looking for. I suggested using our newly aquired AEA ribbon, and it was unbelieveable! they may be too dark for some applications, but on horns....outstanding. |
