Okay so here they are. The tests for the Karma Micro
http://karmamics.com/images/micropage.jpg Didn't really have time to tune the drums but they sound okay. http://www.gearwire.com/mp3/KM_snareA.mp3 http://www.gearwire.com/mp3/KM_snareB.mp3 http://www.gearwire.com/mp3/KM_tomsB.mp3 http://www.gearwire.com/mp3/KM_tomsA.mp3 The snare test was against an SM57. They wer both plugged through two separate Focusrite Platinum Penta Pre/Compressor. For the rack toms I used Octava MK-103's (10dB pad) with all the mics on thier own channel of Presonus BlueTube pres. Floor tom was a Sennheiser MD421-II with both mics through the preamps of the MOTU 828mkII. I mounted them right next to each other. None of the inputs were clipped and the levels at the DAW were within 1dBfs. It should be pretty obvious but I was gonna keep the test blind for a little while. One thing that I noticed was that these are omni mics. I know at some point I heard these were cardioid. |

K, at first listen I thought i prefered Snare A but I prefer tom B, Were the settings flat on the pres and eq's? And the volume balanced the same? But I've been listening again A has a brighter but also thinner sound where as B has a much heavier but duller/flatter sound. I would mos def use eq on both so I'd say it'd be easier to work with, so basically B has more body than A on both samples. But again I guess it's what sound you prefer.

No eq on anything. Straight up and volumes were matched at the input. Vote or die kids.

unfortunately i can't here these on my computer at work, and i have no access to a computer at home (it's in pieces......not my fault). so dan, without revealing which was which, which one (eq, volume changes and alll) did you prefer? how would you describe their sound and usefullness over-all?

Ok. so snare B and toms A were the cheap condesers. I noticed that the waveforms were squared off (meaning SPL was too high for the mic) and there was some DC offset on the attacks.
We'll see how the mics do on other instruments. |
