Actually it was Lutheran, we would drink beer during rehersals, with smoke breaks after every song. Lots of fun, lots of good girls, lots of booze.

yea, i think smoking can add something to your voice, give it a lil more ragged, broken, strained tonality...

...but i recall, a few years ago, i quit smoking for like 6 months, and i could not believe how good my voice sounded without the nasty smoking habit affectating my voice. note to most smokers (and i am one still too haha): chance are good you been smoking since you were a teen, or at least quite a while, and chances are also very good you dont even know, or you have truly never heard your TRUE singing voice, because smoking masks and strains it. if you experiment quiting smoking for a few weeks, you may well be amazed at that voice you never knew you had!

i understand smoking is the hardest addiction to kick (harder than heroin); but the music industry's acceptance and/or encouragement of the habit has made it seem so chic to do so. we have lost way too many talented people (musicians, and non-musicians alike) to cancer, emphasyima (i myself have lost 2 uncles to lung cancer, and another has taken ill recently), infections, and other heart/respritory ailments because of smoking and second-hand smoking; i just think it's about time that we stop pretending this is socially acceptable....these deaths could have been prevented. just from a financial perspective, we as artists and engineers don't have pensions; most of us are without insurance. we need to protect our health jealously! it's because i was told not to by someone i respected that i never began; i feel that we should try to encourage a more healthy lifestyle for the kids that look up to us (they all seem to believe we're cool or something, i don't get it either).

While I don't care if people smoke or not (hey, it's your cancer!), I can say from experience that quitting smoking has helped me sing things that before were simply unsingable. I stopped cold turkey about 2, 2 1/2 years ago........my voice and bandmates have been thanking me since.
