I think I read somewhere that the Shure SM-7 has a really good ratio of gain before feedback. It's a little weird, because I tend to think of those things in the context of studio recording or broadcasting rather than sound reinforcement, but they are dynamics, so they should be tough enough to handle it. Hell, Zappa used U87s as vocal mics on his tours, seeing as how he recorded every note he possibly could. I wonder how many got broken just because of road stress?

That reminds me. Once I had somebody bring their 87 on stage. Be careful when you turn on that channel Nubus, you may regret it.

I assume you got instant and horrible squeal? I've wondered about why Zappa didn't get that, and I figure it was just a combination of him playing huge stages and having the best live sound engineers available.

I'm not sure if there is a more affordable mic that will do as well, but this was the mic that did it for my LOUD band.
Thanks man, I think this is the one.

That's probably one of the OM series. OM-5 or 7?

Nope, its actually the I-5 an instrument mic. I guess it depends on what kinda vocals you do, but he does everything from high opera to low chanting

also of course md421 best mic ever, but priced that way

Oh wow. I have two of those and I never thought of using them for vocals. They are supposed to be excellent guitar mics but I kinda don't like them for that. I've been using them on toms and snare.

But on another note the reason I thought it was the OM-7 was because Audix markets them as mics that will not feed back. They are even supposed to keep the mic from becoming omni-directional when a singer holds it around the wind screen.

Sounds like that might be a perfect mic for hip hop shows then.
