yea, i heard if u consistantly abuse yer voice, you can develop polyps on the vocal chords ouch! it can be career ending. smoking causes those polyps too.

I've heard screamers voices get way deeper and way more screwed up over time. In some cases, such as Leatherface, it can be pretty cool. Sometimes it's not.

i saw form of rocket about a year ago, and they were fantastic.....blew my mind. afterward, i went up to the singer (who screamed so loudly and passionately i had no idea how his vocal chords haven't snapped in two!) and he sounded terrible. his speaking voice was all over the place, it was kinda disturbing to hear him talk and sound so off. it reminds me of darryl mcdaniels of run dmc, he had strained his voice for years, and now hear him talk; it just makes me cringe when he speaks.

Thumbs up

Jawbreaker's lead had to have surgery. I dont think he was nearly as good afterwards, his voice once was like a razor, now its like...well.....s&*tty.

At SXSW we overheard a set by a band called an albatross. Shrieking does not begin to describe what that singer was up to. He was this 90 lb., wirey little dude, but he was climbing on top the the 8' stack of bass cabs, swinging from the framework of the "tent" they were playing in, so that the whole thing was swaying crazily and looked like it might collapse. And their set went on and on and on. And on. It was pretty entertaining to watch, but painful to hear. I have no idea how that guy could even talk afterward.

Default yikes!

yikes! continuous screaming like that... that's a heavy price to pay. it seems like it could cause irreversable vocal cord damage, polups etc. maybe im sounding like an old fuddy duddy, but still reminds me of Cobain, his screaming was insane i often wonder if screamers can even sing at all, or at least, were able to really sing at one point in time.. makes ya wonder...

Oh god those guys are nuts. My roomate invited them to stay at our apartment after our band had played with them a while back. I didn't make it to class the next day. I'm pleasently suprised to hear analbatross is still around.

I was just thinking about what a Natural Voice is. Some people write songs and then have the guts to sing them with no vocal training. They just go for it. This seems to me to be the definition of a natural voice. Some examples: Wayne Coyne, Hendrix, Neil Young, Kris Kristofferson, etc. You'd swear someone like Mike Patton would have had some opera training though I've read this is his natural voice (kind of self trained musical schizo).
Then you have people who take their natural voice and either abuse it like crazy, like Cobain, Black Francis, and loads of other screamers. I was reading about a woman who teaches screamers how to scream without losing their voice. It helps bands avoid canceling shows due to vocal problems.
I guess if you are going to just be natural with your vocal and it's not naturally pleasing, you gotta have some guts!

GREAT POINT! Regardless of whether you got the pipes or not, you gotta get out there and let the people hear you.

great point, bellringer! i think that last thing you said is the best. theres a lot of singers out there who do not have the most beautiful, or, hehe, socially acceptable voices, like, j mascis, or, tiny tim and others... but i like that advice, it makes sense to me, to use your own most comfortable voice, even if it doesnt sound commercially viable. great advice! thnx!!!
