Steps
1. Listen to any album using harsh vocal techniques. If you're not already familiar with the genre, browse the links listed below. Buy CDs from bands and singers whose voices you admire. 2. Warm up for your voice for 30 minutes. You should use "oohhhhhs & aahhhhs" to find your range and warm up with. Then progress into clear vocals. Start quietly and get louder as you can. See the related wikiHow on singing properly, or consult singing resources. This will help ensure that your voice stays healthy and strong. 3. Hum with your lips closed. If it vibrates, you're good. Then with an open throat and mouth, go through your "ahhhs and oohhhhhs". Use your diaphragm. 4. Sing a note within your range, then try forcing air up from your lungs and pushing out hard with your chest (almost like you're vomiting). Then return to a clear note. 5. Experiment with your voice. Find your range using the "ohhhhs and aahhhhs". You must be able to hit the notes singing clear to sing them in a harsh vocal. hook em horns... bless you internets: http://www.wikihow.com/Do-Harsh-Death-Metal-Vocals |

If you need a how-to for singing death metal, then you just shouldn't sing death metal!
Just open up and let the chunks of blood and rotted flesh flow from your lungs, and try to vomit as many zombies and carcasses as possible. It also helps to thrash until you die from it. For added fun, you can take the John Tardy (Obituary) approach and forget about singing words all together and just growl gutteral sounds that occasionally sound like words. It's what the undead would do anyway. |

there is a dvd series out there that teaches you how to do it; they say that it's mostly in the facial expressions.......i'm thinking the other part is constipation.

But those guys really put it all together. I read that all the songs are put together acousticlly, which kind of blows my mind because the drums seem so integral...didn't the drummer quit or something recently? -r |

I never thought we'd talk about death metal on here, so lemme ask:
Who's yer favorite death metal vocalist? Mine answer is actually 2 guys, Jeff Walker and Bill Steer from Carcass. The two together are just so awesome I can't even stand it. Any takers? |

While not actual Deth Metal my favorite growler is Todd Burdette form His Hero is Gone and Tragedy. It's a very unique growl and the way they record it makes the songs so much more of an existential nightmare, which I enjoy.
